The Barnacle Goose is a short-distance migrant that leaves Sweden in the autumn, but the species is seen in very large numbers during the migration periods.
Departure: the bulk of the European population winters along the North Sea coasts, above all in the Netherlands.
Passage: large flocks of Arctic birds from Svalbard and Russia pass through the country in spring and autumn and rest on coastal meadows and fields.
Foraging: at the staging sites they graze short coastal meadows and fields, and the dense flocks produce a very insistent, dog-like barking.
