The Black Redstart breeds in cavities and on sheltered ledges in buildings — under roofs, on beams, in ventilation openings and in wall cracks. In its original habitat it breeds correspondingly in rock crevices and among boulders. The female normally lays 4–6 eggs and incubates them, while both parents then feed the young. The species often manages two broods during a favourable season.
