The Common Ringed Plover breeds on open ground — sand, gravel or shingle — where the female normally lays 4 eggs in a shallow scrape. The eggs and the newly hatched young are heavily camouflaged and very hard to spot. The parents lure intruders away with a distraction display in which they feign injury.
