The nest is a simple, well-camouflaged scrape on a shoreline tussock or in dense mixed vegetation by water. The female normally lays 4 pear-shaped, olive-brown eggs with dark spots. Incubation lasts 19–20 days and is carried out by both parents. The young are nidifugous and leave the nest immediately after hatching; they are full-grown after four weeks.
