The Curlew Sandpiper does not breed in Sweden. On the Siberian tundra it lays its eggs in a shallow scrape on the ground, well hidden in the tundra vegetation. Breeding success varies greatly between years and is governed to a large extent by the availability of small rodents: in years with few lemmings, predators and birds of prey instead turn their hunting towards bird nests, which lowers breeding success considerably.
