The Eurasian Hoopoe nests in cavities, preferably in a hollow tree, a stone wall or a building. The female lays a large clutch, often 5–8 eggs. The nest is known for its strong smell, since it is rarely cleaned and the young can also squirt a foul-smelling secretion in defence. In Sweden breeding is a very rare exception.
