European Green Woodpecker: Nest & eggs
The European Green Woodpecker excavates its own nest and needs no ready-made cavities or nest boxes.
- Nest hole: its own hole chiselled out in soft wood, often in the rotting trunk of a deciduous tree.
- Old trees: the species is tied to deciduous and mixed woodland, parks and wood-pasture with old, large trees.
- Parental care: the female lays 5–7 eggs, and the pair take turns incubating for 17–19 days.
The young remain 21–24 days in the nest hole before fledging.
