The European Herring Gull is a resident or short-distance migrant, and large numbers overwinter in Sweden since the species easily finds food even in winter.
Overwintering: many remain along the coasts and in towns year-round, often at fishing harbours, rubbish tips and outdoor cafés.
Diet: as an omnivore it makes use of fish, refuse, mussels and food scraps, and the urban environment provides plenty of food even during the cold months.
Flocking: in winter European Herring Gulls gather in flocks at the best feeding sites, often together with other large and smaller gulls.
