The Ferruginous Duck does not breed regularly in Sweden. In its core areas it builds a well-concealed nest in dense shore vegetation near water, and the female usually lays 7–11 eggs. The species is strongly tied to shallow, vegetation-rich wetlands, which makes it sensitive to drainage and land reclamation.
