Great Spotted Woodpecker: In winter
The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a resident that remains in the country all winter.
- Food: in winter conifer cones are wedged fast in "anvils" where the bird chisels out the seeds, and insect larvae are sought under the bark.
- Bird table: the species is a regular winter visitor at bird tables and particularly appreciates fat balls and fats.
- Irruptions: in certain irruption years large numbers of birds may arrive from the east when the cone seed crop fails.
Since it is a resident, the Great Spotted Woodpecker can be seen in forest, parks and gardens year-round.
