The Grey-headed Woodpecker's song is one of the most melancholy bird calls in the Nordic forest — a falling series of whistling notes: "kyy-kyy-kyy-kyy-kyy" that gradually descends in pitch and tempo. The song carries far in quiet forest and is heard above all during February–April. Its drumming is weaker and shorter than that of the European Green Woodpecker.
