The Merlin builds no nest of its own. It nests on the ground on mountain heaths, often sheltered by a rock or a bush, or uses old crow and raptor nests in trees in the forest country. The female normally lays 4–5 eggs, which are incubated for about a month. The young leave the nest after not quite a month but are fed by the parents for a further period while they learn to hunt.
