Breeding takes place on the Arctic tundra, where the species is heavily dependent on the availability of lemmings. Good lemming years produce abundant breeding, whereas in years when lemmings are scarce the species may be almost entirely absent as a breeder. The female usually lays 2 eggs in a simple ground nest.
