The Common Crossbill has an unusual breeding season and may breed as early as January–April, even in sub-zero temperatures, as long as the cones provide plenty of seed. The nest is well insulated and built high up in a spruce. The female usually lays 3–4 eggs. The breeding period is governed entirely by seed years, and in good years the species can breed for much of the year.
