The Rock Ptarmigan's call is a hard, dry, rasping croak, often rendered as "arr-arr-arr-ka-ka-ka". The call sounds mechanical and somewhat frog-like and is heard above all from displaying males in spring. The voice carries across the open mountain terrain and often reveals the bird before it is seen.
