The Ruddy Turnstone breeds mainly outside Sweden, on arctic tundra and coastal ground. The Swedish pairs breed on bare skerries in the archipelago, where the nest is a simple scrape on the ground. Both parents take part in guarding the young, which are nest-leavers and forage for themselves shortly after hatching. The harsh, wind-exposed archipelago environment makes breeding sensitive to disturbance, and predation from gulls and corvids can hit individual pairs hard.
