Ottenby, at the southern tip of Öland, is one of the most important sites in the Nordic countries for migrating and staging birds. Ottenby Bird Observatory, founded in 1946, is one of Europe's oldest ringing stations and has recorded more than 380 bird species. In spring and autumn, enormous numbers of passerines, waders and raptors pass along the island's narrow spit towards the iconic Långe Jan lighthouse.
