An island and skerry reserve forming part of the Vest-Vikna coastal landscape, a Ramsar site of 135.9 square kilometres designated in 2013 with ten sub-areas. Sørøyan is of particular value as a breeding ground for seabirds, and lies just to the south-east of the adjoining Nordøyan nature reserve.
