Tåkern in Östergötland is one of Sweden's most important bird lakes and a Ramsar-listed wetland of international significance. The lake's dense reedbeds are home to Great Bittern, Western Marsh Harrier and Great Crested Grebe, and during April and May thousands of staging Common Cranes and Whooper Swans pass through. Outside the visitor areas and marked trails, access is prohibited from 1 April to 30 June to protect breeding birds. Tåkern is one of the best places in Sweden to hear the Great Bittern's characteristic booming call.
