Black Kite: In winter

The Black Kite is a true long-distance migrant and is not present in Sweden during the winter.

  • Wintering: the European birds migrate far south and winter in Africa.
  • Absence: the species is seen in Sweden only during the summer half of the year, and then mainly as scattered records at open water in Skåne and on Öland.
  • Rare: with only a few tens of breeding pairs, winter records in the country are not part of the picture.

It withdraws from the winter in the same way as most of Sweden's summer-visiting raptors.
