The male's song is a rapid, slightly accelerating and rising “po-po-po-po-po-po” of usually six to twelve notes per phrase. The phrase is repeated in long series during still, clear nights in March and April. The call carries far through the forest and is often the only sure sign that the species is present in an area, since the owl sits well hidden by day.
