Common Chiffchaff: Nest & eggs

The Common Chiffchaff is a free-nester that builds a hidden nest in or near the ground, not in cavities.

• Site: low down in dense undergrowth or on the ground, preferably in the damper parts of mixed woodland and coniferous forest.
• Nest: a domed, roofed nest with a side entrance, well hidden in grass and scrub.
• Breeding: the female lays a clutch of 5–6 eggs and incubates for about two weeks, usually with one brood per season.

The roofed, ground-level nest protects the eggs and young in the lower vegetation where the species thrives.
