The Goldeneye is unique among Swedish ducks in nesting in cavities. It uses old woodpecker holes, natural tree holes and erected Goldeneye nest boxes, often high above the ground near water. The female normally lays 8–11 eggs, which she incubates for about 29–30 days. The young jump down from the nest opening just a couple of days after hatching and reach the water unharmed, even from a height of several metres.
