The Goldeneye is largely a resident that migrates only as far as necessary to find open water, and winter is a good time to study the species at close range.
Overwintering: many birds move from forest lakes to ice-free coasts, river mouths and waters near towns.
Flocking: in winter Goldeneyes gather in flocks on open waters, often together with other diving ducks.
Foraging: it dives for aquatic insects, crustaceans and molluscs even during the cold season, as long as the water is ice-free.
