The Common Kestrel lives largely on voles, but also takes mice, lizards, large insects and small birds. It hunts by hovering over open ground and dropping onto the prey when it is spotted. The Common Kestrel can see ultraviolet light, which allows it to make out the urine-marked trails of voles in the vegetation and thereby more easily find areas rich in prey.
