The Goosander breeds in tree holes, rock crevices and large nest boxes, sometimes a good distance from the water and high up. The female normally lays 8–12 eggs and incubates alone for 32–35 days. The newly hatched young jump boldly down from the nest to the ground and are then led swiftly to the nearest water. Females with broods sometimes join together, so that one female may be seen leading a large gathering of young of varying ages.
