The Common Scoter breeds by mountain lakes and bog pools in the northern forest and montane region. The nest is placed on the ground close to water, well concealed in the vegetation, and the clutch usually comprises 6–8 eggs. The female incubates and cares for the young alone; they are nidifugous and are led to water shortly after hatching.
