The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, often in a tussock on damp heath or coastal meadow, lined with grass stems. The female normally lays 4 eggs, which both parents incubate for about three weeks. The young are nidifugous and forage for themselves but are led by the parents, of which the female often leaves the brood early.
