The Dunnock is a short-distance migrant, but a growing proportion of the population stays and overwinters in the country.
Migration: most leave in September–October for western Europe, while some overwinter in southern Sweden and can be seen in hedges and at bird tables in Götaland.
Food: in winter it switches to seeds, berries and crumbs, and readily picks up small seeds and rolled oats on the ground beneath bird feeders rather than up on them.
Behaviour: it continues to keep close to the ground in the cover of thickets, which makes it easy to overlook if you don't recognise it.
