The Eurasian Curlew's most common call is the wistful, ringing "kuur-li" — a sound that is one of the utterly characteristic voices of coastal meadows and bogs and carries far across the open landscape. It is given year-round but is most intense during the breeding season. The display call is a dramatic, escalating composition: a long, rising and bubbling trill "trrrrr-kuru-kuru-kurli" delivered by the male in a swaying song flight over the territory. The display flight begins in March–April and is often the first sign that the Eurasian Curlew has arrived at the breeding site.
