The Roller is a hole-nester. The nest is placed in a natural tree cavity, an old woodpecker hole or sometimes in a sandbank. The female usually lays 4–5 eggs. The availability of suitable cavity trees in open, warm countryside is one of the decisive factors for the species' occurrence.
