In summer the Fieldfare feeds on earthworms, insects and larvae, which it seeks on open ground and damp meadows. In autumn and winter berries and fruit dominate — rowan berries and whitebeam berries are favourites, but apples and other windfall fruit are also used freely. The shift from animal food in summer to berries and fruit in winter is typical of the thrushes and explains why the Fieldfare follows the berry supply as it roams about in flocks.
