The Great Auk bred in large, densely packed colonies on rocky islands free of land predators. The pair laid a single egg per year, directly on the bare rock ledge with no real nest material. The slow rate of reproduction, with just one young per year, made the species especially vulnerable to the intensive hunting carried out by humans.
