The Great Cormorant breeds in large, often densely packed colonies on islands, in trees or on cliffs. The nest is built of twigs, seaweed and other material, and the clutch usually comprises 3–4 eggs. The corrosive droppings from large colonies can over time damage or kill the trees in which the nests sit, which sometimes causes colonies to relocate.
