The Great Crested Grebe builds a floating nest of aquatic plants, anchored in the reeds. The clutch usually comprises 3–5 eggs, and the incubation period is about 27–29 days. The striped young often ride on the parents' backs during the first weeks, kept there sheltered and warm while the other parent dives for food. Breeding begins with the famous courtship dance.
