The Great Egret is for the most part a quiet bird. At the nest and within the breeding colony you can hear a rasping, hoarse croaking and a gurgling cackle passing between the birds. When a bird is flushed it may give a short, sharp "kraak", recalling that of the Grey Heron but somewhat lower and softer. Away from the breeding season it is rarely heard.
