The diet consists largely of insects, larvae and spiders gathered in the reeds and their vicinity. Thanks to its size and stout bill, the Great Reed Warbler can also take larger prey than its smaller relatives, and it sometimes takes small fish, tadpoles and other small animals. It climbs skilfully among the reed stems when searching for food.
