Great Reed Warbler: Nest & eggs

The Great Reed Warbler is a free-nester that builds a characteristic nest fixed to the reeds above the water.

• Nest site: in large, continuous and perennial reed beds in nutrient-rich lakes, river mouths and lagoons.
• Nest: a deep, basket-like construction woven firmly between several stout reed stems, usually 40–100 cm above the water surface.
• Breeding: the female normally lays 3–6 eggs and does most of the incubation, which lasts about two weeks, generally with one brood per year.

The dependence on large reed stands makes the species sensitive to changes in water level and to the management of the wetlands.
