The Great Snipe is best heard at the display ground. At traditional lek sites, groups of 5–15 males gather at dawn and dusk and perform a bubbling, clicking and whining sound in chorus. It is one of the most peculiar and fabled sounds of the Swedish mires. When flushed, however, the bird is silent, unlike the Common Snipe.
