Grey Heron: In winter

The Grey Heron is largely a resident bird in Sweden, and some birds survive the winter as long as they can find open, ice-free water to fish in.

• Wintering: many birds remain in southern Sweden at ice-free lakes, rivers and coasts, while others migrate shorter distances south.
• Foraging: when the waters freeze over, the Grey Heron can be seen hunting voles on open fields and along ditches far from water.
• Cold sensitivity: severe winters with prolonged ice hit the population hard, which means the number of winterers varies from year to year.
