The Slavonian Grebe builds a floating nest of aquatic plants, anchored to reeds or other vegetation. The female normally lays 3–5 eggs, which are incubated by both parents. The newly hatched, striped young can climb onto the parents' backs during their first days of life, which gives them protection from cold and predators. The species often breeds in loose colonies or in the company of other waterbirds.
