The Jack Snipe is remarkably silent. When flushed it usually flies up completely silently — an important distinction from the Common Snipe, which flies up with a harsh, screeching "käätsch". At the breeding site the male may be heard giving a hollow, thudding display call reminiscent of distant hoofbeats.
