Lesser Spotted Woodpecker: In winter
The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is a resident that remains in its deciduous woodlands throughout the winter.
- Food: in winter it searches for insects and larvae under loose bark, above all on thin branches high up in the tree canopy.
- Movement: it then often moves almost tit-like out on the outermost branches, which makes it easy to overlook.
- Habitat: it keeps to deciduous forest with dead wood, alder carr and parks with old deciduous trees even during the cold season.
Because it is a resident, the species can be seen all year round, but it is easiest to detect in early spring when the males are drumming.
