Breeding season: April–July, 1 brood per year. - Nest: a shallow cup-shape, hidden in dense shoreline vegetation near water. Lined with down plucked from the female's breast. - Eggs: 8–13, greenish-grey to olive-yellow-brown. Incubation 27–28 days by the female. - Ducklings: nidifugous — they leave the nest within a day. Fledged after 50–60 days. - The male leaves the female shortly after hatching and joins bachelor flocks for the summer moult.
