The Northern Hawk-Owl's song is a long, rolling and bubbling trill, often rendered as a rapid "ki-ki-ki-ki" or a whirring "ulululul". The trill can be heard both day and night during the breeding season. When alarmed, hard, sharp warning calls are heard. The scientific species name ulula alludes to the wailing calls.
