Northern Wheatear: In winter

The Northern Wheatear is a pronounced long-distance migrant that leaves Sweden entirely during the winter half of the year.

• Overwintering: the entire world population, including the birds that breed in North America and Siberia, overwinters in Africa south of the Sahara.
• Migration: it leaves the country during August–September and returns in April–May to the open stony grounds.
• Absence: it is not seen in Sweden in winter — it is a summer visitor on mountain heaths, clear-cuts, cairns and coastal pastures.
