The Red-backed Shrike nests in open, scrubby ground. The nest is a sturdy cup of twigs, grass and rootlets, placed well sheltered in a dense, preferably thorny bush. The female normally lays 5–6 eggs, and the incubation is done mainly by the female and lasts about 14–16 days. The young are fed by both parents and fledge after a good two weeks.
