The Rook is a decided colonial breeder. The nests, simple but sturdy stick platforms, are built high up in the tree crowns, and a colony can comprise from a dozen to several hundred nests. The female usually lays 3–5 eggs. Colonial breeding provides protection against predators and facilitates the exchange of information about where food is plentiful in the surroundings.
