The Ruff has an unusual mating system in which the males gather at communal display grounds, known as leks, and show off their ornate plumage in ritualised dances and contests to attract females. The male takes no part in breeding — the female incubates the eggs and raises the young alone. The nest is placed well concealed in a tussock, and the female usually lays 4 eggs.
