The Sandwich Tern nests in dense colonies on sandy or gravelly islands and bars, often together with other terns or Black-headed Gulls, whose vigilance provides protection against predators. The nest is a simple scrape in the sand. The female usually lays 1–2 eggs, which are incubated for about three weeks. The young later gather in larger groups within the colony.
